I finally stopped fighting my umbilical by hand and started using a chain stopper on the bell
For my first two years on the job I was flaking the umbilical out by feel on every bell run, and I lost count of how many times it snagged on the stage frame at 90 feet. Now I run a chain stopper off the bell and let the line come tight on its own, which sounds lazy but it keeps tension even when the current shoves me around. My old supervisor in Port Fourchon saw me doing it and said "that's how the old Gulf hands did it, we just never wrote it down." Takes me about 30 seconds to rig now instead of the 5 minutes of swearing it used to. Curious if anyone else runs a stopper or if you all just tail the line short and deal with it.
