That critique about my fin kick technique from an old timer in the Gulf saved me from blowing out my knees after 6 weeks
He told me I was using too much ankle and not enough hip drive, so I switched it up on my last 30m valve job and now I don't feel like I've been hit by a truck after a 4-hour bottom time; has anyone else had a dive buddy call them out on something that actually fixed a nagging issue?

Hang on a second, I gotta stop you there about the hips thing. The old timer was right about too much ankle, but going straight to hip drive can mess you up too if you're not careful. You actually want to use your core and thighs more than your hips, because the hips moving too much can strain your lower back on those deep valve jobs. I saw a guy blow out his SI joint trying to force hip drive like he was swimming butterfly or something.

Start asking what kind of wetsuit thickness they're running. I've seen guys tweak their form because their suit was too stiff or too floaty, and it throws everything off. Fix the suit, fix the movement, no blown-out backs.
