Update: a tender boat deckhand in Morgan City asked me one question about my bailout bottle and it changed my whole pre-dive check
I was gearing up for a 4 hour job on a pipeline riser in Morgan City when a deckhand I barely knew pointed at my bailout and asked when I last cracked the valve. Turned out it had been sitting since the job in Galveston 3 weeks earlier and the valve was stiff enough that I would have found out the hard way at 60 feet. Do you all actually crack your bailout before every splash or just trust the last guy who touched it?
A stiff valve after 3 weeks sitting isn't some crazy close call, that's just normal gear maintenance. You crack a valve once and it's stiff, you add it to your check, done. Half the boats I've been on, the bailout gets checked by whoever is on deck before you even get there, and nobody's dying over it. Yeah it's good practice, but acting like one deckhand saved your life at 60 feet is a bit much. Guys dive every day with stuff that ain't perfect and they come up fine.
