I blew $280 on a vibrator screed for my last driveway pour and it was the worst money I ever spent
Everybody on the crew kept telling me a screed vibrator was the way to go for a 24 by 30 driveway over in Franklin, so I dropped $280 on one. Ran it on that pour and it pulled way too much cream to the top, then the finish was soft in spots and I had to fight the trowel the whole time. I could have rented a roller screed for $90 for the day and saved myself the headache. What do you all use to get the mud down on wider slabs without wrecking the surface?
Man, that brings back bad memories. I ran into the same thing on a 26 by 32 pour a couple years back, pulled cream up top and left me with a soft crust that fought me all through finishing. What works for me on wider slabs is a straightedge and a jitterbug, get the mud roughly struck off first, then hit it with the jitterbug to settle it without dragging all the fat up. Let it sit and bleed a bit before you touch it with a trowel, that soft spot problem usually comes from working it too early. A roller screed is fine for getting it flat but it won't do the job of settling the mix, so figure out which problem you're actually trying to solve before you spend the money.
