Heard a guy at the coffee shop say chemtrails are just normal plane exhaust

I was grabbing a latte downtown near 3rd street and this older dude was arguing with his friend about it. He kept saying the government has been spraying for decades and everyone just calls it a conspiracy to shut people up. It made me wonder how much of this is actually proven vs just popular belief. Has anyone here actually looked into the scientific studies on this stuff?

Just smile and nod while walking away, it's not worth the headache.

I gotta push back on that a little, @pat_park... I think there's a middle ground where you can actually listen to people without agreeing right away. The thing is, the whole chemtrail idea got started because of a real thing called the "chemtrail conspiracy theory" which was actually debunked by scientists at places like NASA and the EPA. They did studies showing those trails are just normal contrails from planes, mostly water vapor and soot, and the white haze you see is just ice crystals forming at high altitudes. But the problem is, people see those trails lingering longer than they used to, and they feel like the government is hiding something, which i can understand even if i don't buy the chemical spraying part. I've looked at peer-reviewed papers on this, and the consensus is pretty strong that it's just exhaust and you can tell by how the trails change with the weather and air traffic patterns. I think it's okay to disagree with someone without walking away, as long as you're not trying to win a fight.
