A GC in Tulsa told me to stop bidding small jobs, and I can't decide if he's right
A general contractor I do work for in Tulsa pulled me aside after I finished a $3,800 bathroom job and said I was wasting my time on anything under 10 grand. He runs about $2M a year and says small jobs eat the same paperwork, the same trips to the supply house, and the same insurance headaches as a big one, so the pay per hour is just bad. I pushed back because those small jobs kept me fed during slow months and a few of them turned into repeat customers who now send me bigger work. Now I'm sitting on two bids, one for a $4k repair and one for a $14k remodel, and I keep hearing his voice when I look at the smaller one. Is there a number where you all just say no to a job, or do you take the small stuff to stay busy? Curious what the full time guys out there do.
