A quiet conversation with a retired electrician made me rethink the whole hustle mindset
Ran into an old sparky at a supply house in Akron last Tuesday who said he never bid a job under $500 over his costs, even in 2008, and he still ate fine. He basically called my habit of chasing tiny jobs for repeat clients a race to the bottom. Anyone else stop taking the small stuff and see their actual profit go up?
Agree completely. I used to skip the little stuff too, thinking it wasn't worth the trip, and then I watched a guy down the street take every $150 job that came his way. Six months later he had a full schedule and I was sitting around waiting for the big fish. Those small jobs turn into referrals, and referrals turn into the bigger work you actually want. Plus the people with small jobs tell their neighbors, and next thing you know you're doing three houses on the same street. Turning them down is like throwing away free advertising.
