Overheard a GC in Phoenix say he bills clients for the drive to the supply house
I was grabbing coffee last week and heard a GC tell his foreman that he adds a 2 hour line to every invoice just for supply house runs, and nobody has pushed back in 3 years. I've been eating that time myself on every job, which is probably 5 or 6 unpaid hours a week. Do you all bill for travel to grab materials or is that just something I'm supposed to swallow?
A 2 hour line on every invoice for supply runs sounds like a great story to tell at the coffee shop, but I'd bet money that GC is full of it. Phoenix is a big market with a lot of sharp builders and even sharper clients, and nobody pushed back on that for 3 years? Come on. Maybe he sneaks a trip or two into a bigger line item and rounds up, sure, that's normal. But a straight up 2 hour block, itemized, on every single bill? That would get caught the first time someone's kid added up the receipts. I've seen guys say stuff like this to look like they run a tight ship, and half of it is just talk. So before you feel bad about your 5 or 6 hours, ask yourself if you actually believe that story or if it's just a guy running his mouth.
