Counted 214 metal tags on one beech tree in Portland and it finally clicked why people do this
Went for a walk in a park near my place in Portland last weekend and noticed this one big beech tree had little metal tags nailed all over the trunk, so I counted them out of boredom, 214 of them. Turns out each tag is from a different person who wanted to mark that they visited or loved the tree, and the oldest ones go back decades, which made me realize this tree is basically a guestbook that keeps growing. Does anyone know if tagging trees like this hurts them, or is it mostly harmless if it's just on the bark?
Wait, 214 tags on ONE tree? That's wild. I mean I've seen trees with a few initials carved in or a couple of those little plaques but 214 is a whole other thing. Some of those tags going back decades too, so people have been doing this for like 50 years without it killing the tree. Maybe it's just me but I always assumed nailing stuff into bark was bad for them, so if this beech is still standing after all that, the tree must be pretty tough. Still seems like it can't be great for it long term though.
