Just realized my client's hair was breaking from a new 'protective' style I was doing

About two months back, I started using a different method for knotless braids, thinking it was gentler. I was doing them super tight at the base for a clean look, then using a lighter tension down the length. Saw the same client again this week for a take-down and her hairline and crown were a mess, with broken strands about an inch long all over. The before and after from her last visit to now was shocking. I think the initial pull, even though it felt secure and not painful to her, was putting constant stress on those roots for weeks. It took me seeing the real damage up close to connect the dots. Has anyone else run into this with certain braiding techniques that seem safe but aren't?

That "clean look" from the tight base is exactly what did the damage.

Actually, the damage usually comes from the hair being pulled too tight at the edges over time, not the base itself. A secure foundation is key for protection, but tension on the hairline is the real problem. It's about how the install is done, not just having a firm base.

But a weak base can cause tension too, right @young.drew?
