Spent 3 hours fighting a perm that just wouldn't take

Last Wednesday I had a client come in with really thick, resistant hair. I've been doing perms for over 20 years, so I thought I had it handled. But after the first rod set and processing, the curls barely held. I had to redo the whole thing, switching to a stronger solution and leaving it on an extra 10 minutes. In total it took me about 3 hours when a normal perm takes me 45 minutes. Has anyone else run into hair that just refuses to perm no matter what you try?

My neighbor tried to perm her poodle once and ended up with a bald dog and a 400 dollar vet bill. At least your client still has hair.

Yeah so @thomas105 I had basically the same thing happen with my sister's maltipoo a few years back. She used some home perm kit she found at a beauty supply store and the dog ended up with chemical burns and patchy hair loss. It took like six months for her fur to grow back normal. What finally worked for us was switching to a really gentle oatmeal shampoo and putting her on a fish oil supplement for the coat. The vet said the hair follicles weren't damaged permanently but they needed time to recover without any harsh chemicals. Your client might want to try something similar if the vet okays it first.
