Used to cut wet hair for every client, now I cut 80% of them dry and my blowouts hold longer
I spent my first 6 years behind the chair at a salon in Portland cutting everyone fresh out of the shampoo bowl because that's how I was taught in school. About 2 years ago I started doing my consult and most of my cut on dry hair first, and now my clients with fine hair get an extra 4 or 5 days out of their style before it goes flat. Anyone else switch to dry cutting, and how do you handle clients who expect the full shampoo first thing?
Man, I gotta disagree on the 80% dry thing. Fine hair sure, dry cutting shows you the natural fall and you can see where it wants to sit, that part makes total sense. But for thick or curly clients you're rolling the dice, wet hair stretches and springs back, so a dry cut can end up shorter than you planned once they wash it at home. I do a hybrid, consult and rough shape dry, then finish wet so the lines are clean and I know exactly what's coming off. The shampoo thing is just habit for most people, I tell them straight that I can see their hair better dry and they usually come around after one cut.
