Vent: Tried that new purple shampoo everyone's raving about and my highlights turned green

I used the Fanola No Yellow stuff on my blonde balayage after a friend swore by it, but after leaving it on for 5 minutes like the bottle says, my hair looked swampy. Anybody else have a toner or purple shampoo backfire on them like this?

Wait, you left purple shampoo on for five whole minutes with highlights? That stuff is strong, I usually only do like 30 seconds to a minute on my blonde or it goes weird.

Did you catch that beauty school myth about purple shampoo actually being a dye and not a toner? I read somewhere that the purple pigments can actually stain your hair if you leave it on too long, especially with highlights since they're more porous. The trick is to apply it to wet hair and watch it like a hawk - once you see that lavender tint start to show, rinse it out immediately. I've heard that even 2 minutes can be risky if your highlights are really light or if you have any silver or white sections mixed in. Have you ever had it turn your highlights an ashy gray by accident?
