Heard a stranger's rant about bad fan fiction endings and now I second guess mine
So I'm waiting for a bus on Granville Street in Vancouver and this guy is on the phone tearing apart a story where the author killed off every side character in the final chapter just to be 'edgy'. He said it felt like betrayal, not creativity. That stuck with me because I definitely wrote a few endings like that back in 2019 to subvert expectations. Now I'm wondering if my current WIP wraps up too safely because I'm scared of pulling that move again. How do you all balance a twist ending without making readers feel cheated? Has anyone else had a random overheard criticism completely change how they approach their outline?
