I got past writer's block by writing a scene where my detective's only clue was a single, mismatched sock
It was so ridiculous that it broke the tension, and I ended up keeping the sock as a running gag. Has anyone else used a deliberately absurd detail to kickstart a stalled story?

That mismatched sock trick is great. I read a blog post once where a writer got unstuck by having their serious fantasy hero obsessed with collecting novelty spoons.
