My writing group split over whether prompts should come with word counts, and I think the side I took is losing
Honestly last Tuesday at our library meetup in Boise, one of the regulars, Dana, said she deletes any prompt that comes with a word count attached because it kills the scene before she starts. Tbh I get it, a 500 word cap on a prompt about a funeral feels like someone telling you when to stop crying. But our other guy Marcus said without a limit he just rambles for 2,000 words and never finishes anything, and he's got a point too since half our group never posts because they freeze up. I said maybe it depends on the prompt itself, like a flash fiction one needs a cap and an open scene one does not. Ngl though I keep flip flopping because I finished more prompts in the month we had limits than the whole year before. So which side are you on, do you want your prompts bare or boxed in?
My buddy in a Spokane group started slapping soft caps like "aim for 800" on her prompts and the freeze-up people actually started posting, while the wordy ones just ignored it. Maybe limits work better when they're a nudge and not a rule.
