Pro tip: use a character voice journal before starting your rough draft

I used to just wing it and write my first pages flat, then I started keeping a 3 line journal in each character's voice for a week before drafting. It changed how I write dialogue, now every character sounds different instead of like me with different names. Has anyone else tried voice journals or do you use another trick to separate your characters?
