Just finished a build in Asheville and the final lumber count was 14,500 board feet

I was tracking costs and the number just seemed crazy high compared to the plans. My partner says it's normal for a custom mountain home with all those decks, but I'm still shook. Do you guys usually see that kind of overage, or did I mess up the takeoff?

My cousin's place in Boone used 16k board feet easy. Those mountain specs eat lumber with all the cantilevers and extra bracing. Your partner's right, it's standard.

Yeah those cantilevers are no joke. My buddy built near Asheville and his engineer made him double up on all the beams, said the soil shift was worse than they thought. @brooke_carter I feel you on the ramen budget, my friend ended up selling his ATV to cover the last lumber delivery.

Yikes, no wonder my wallet hurts just thinking about it. Guess I'll be eating ramen for the next decade to pay for all that extra wood.
