That custom builder I nearly fired saved my slab foundation

Back in June I hired a custom builder in Austin who insisted on a $3,000 soil compaction test before pouring concrete, which I thought was a total upsell. Then my neighbor's slab cracked six inches deep during the first dry spell because his builder skipped that step. Have any of you regretted trusting a builder who cut corners on the prep work?

I actually read a article about this recently that said skipping soil tests is one of the biggest mistakes people make with foundations. Your neighbor's cracked slab is a perfect example of why that $3,000 is actually a bargain in the long run.

What kind of soil issues can actually cause that much damage to a foundation slab?
