Watched an old framer in Tulsa cut rafters with a chalk line and a handsaw, and it changed how I price my jobs
Back in 2009 I was a helper on a custom build outside Tulsa and the lead framer, Ray, wouldn't let a single guy touch a skilsaw on the rafters. He'd snap a chalk line, cut every one by hand, and told me a roof that gets cut one rafter at a time fits tighter than one banged out in a stack. I started pricing in that extra time after we walked a house in Broken Arrow and the inspector passed the framing on the first look, no callbacks. Now I build 2 extra days into every roof bid and clients still ask why I'm not the cheapest number. Any other builders out there eating a little labor cost because the fast way kept biting you later?
So Ray made you cut rafters by hand and somehow YOU ended up doing extra time on every bid for the rest of your life? That old framer really got his money's worth out of you without even paying you.
