Wrote off spray foam for years until my Madison build hit -15 that January
I always figured spray foam was overkill and fiberglass batts in the walls were plenty for a Wisconsin winter, so I built that way for close to a decade. Then we framed a house outside Madison and the homeowner pushed for closed cell in the rim joists, and when we came back in January the furnace was barely running while my other ongoing build three miles away had ice on the inside of the windows. Was the extra cost worth it for you guys, or did I just get lucky with one tight house?
