A local hospital hack convinced me to start backing up my files

Well, my backup plan for a hack was just to look really disappointed at the intruder. I figured if they saw my sad face and my tax returns from 2012, they'd feel bad and leave. Turns out they just encrypt everything and send a ransom note instead. So yeah, maybe I should look into that antivirus thing too.

Wait, backups don't really protect you from a hack though. That's more for hardware failure or accidental deletion. For a hack, you'd want good antivirus, updated software, and strong passwords. Backups just save your files, not stop someone from getting in.
