My home network went from getting hit every day to maybe once a month

For about a year, my router logs in Portland showed constant pings and login attempts, sometimes 50 a day. I finally set up a separate guest network for all my smart plugs and the TV. That was six months ago. Now the main network is almost silent, and the junk traffic is isolated. Has anyone else seen a big drop just from splitting off IoT stuff?

My buddy had the exact same thing happen. He was seeing constant weird traffic on his main Wi-Fi, and it was driving him nuts. After he put his smart lights and that cheap camera on a guest network, his router logs just went quiet. It really shows how much junk those IoT devices send out looking for connections.

Yeah it's wild how much stuff is just phoning home all the time now, I mean even my smart plug feels like it's chatting more than I am.

That guest network trick is solid, @ruby973. It stops the chatter but doesn't fix the real problem. These companies design the devices to call home by default, and we have to work around it.
