Walked into a job site in Cleveland and saw a drafter using a 3D scanner on an old warehouse

I always thought laser scanning was overkill for renovation work but watching that guy map out the whole floor plan in 20 minutes convinced me I need to learn the software, has anyone else tried using a scanner for retrofits?

PSA: That big pipeline protest article in Ecuador vanished from Google News around 3 AM last Tuesday.

I had it saved in my bookmarks and when I clicked it the next morning it was a 404 but the Wayback Machine still had the whole thing from 12 hours earlier, has anyone else noticed specific articles just disappearing like that overseas without any explanation?

Client said my drawer slides were too loud and it sent me down a rabbit hole

So I had this kitchen install last month in Austin, and the homeowner kept saying the soft-close drawers sounded like rocks grinding. At first I thought he was just being picky, you know? But I went back and listened, and yeah, those cheaper undermounts I used were definitely chattering on the sides. Now I'm torn between sticking with Blumotion or trying out those Accuride 3832s on the next job. Has anyone else had a client call out noise that made you switch hardware?

Switched sides on banning 'To Kill a Mockingbird' after talking to my daughter's teacher

I used to think banning books was always wrong, no exceptions. But last week my daughter's 8th grade teacher in Austin showed me the original edition with the n-word used 48 times. She explained how the text makes her Black students feel attacked, even when the teacher tries to frame it historically. Now I'm not saying ban it forever, but I get why some schools swap it for 'The Hate U Give' instead. Has anyone else seen a copy with the slur count versus a modernized version? What did your school do?

Went to look at a job in an old church and saw the weirdest carpet fail ever

I walked into this church in Arlington to give a quote on replacing their sanctuary carpet. The old stuff had this pattern where the seams were all running sideways instead of with the room length. Turns out some guy back in the 90s installed it backwards and the glue was so old it turned into powder when I touched it. Anyone else run into a job where the previous installer just did the complete opposite of common sense?

Found a way to clean really tight bends without a whip

Had a job in an old house near downtown Austin last week. The flue had a 45 degree bend I couldn't get my standard brush through. Tied a sock filled with chain links to my rod and pushed it through slow. Worked way better than I expected and didn't scratch the liner. Anyone else use a DIY trick like that for tricky spots?

Old timer told me to stop using paper tape on inside corners...

He said just use mud and a corner trowel instead, so I tried it on a small closet in Denver last Tuesday and it actually came out way flatter with less bubbling. Anyone else ditch paper tape on corners or is it just me?
