TIL my router was still on the default admin password for 4 years
I got a weird popup on my laptop Monday saying someone tried to log into my router from an IP in another country. Turns out I never changed the admin password since I set it up back in 2021, so I did that right away and turned off remote access. Now I'm wondering what else on my home network has been sitting wide open this whole time, so what's the first thing you all lock down when you move into a new place?
Did you check if the router firmware is up to date too? Old firmware has known bugs that let people in even with a good password, so that's the next thing I'd fix. After that, change the wifi password and make sure WPS is turned off since that button thing is stupid easy to crack.
