A guy in a dead mall Facebook group said my photos were flat, and he was right
I post pics from the old Northgate Mall in Chattanooga and a guy commented that all my shots were flat because I kept shooting straight down the middle of the concourse. He said to get low by the old fountain and shoot at an angle so the ceiling tiles lead the eye. I tried it the next trip and the photo got picked up by a local history page, which was a small win. Now I always look for a corner or a low spot before I snap anything. What spots do you all use to add depth when the place is just one long hallway?
Man, I gotta push back on this one. Shooting straight down the middle of a concourse is underrated and that guy in your Facebook group sounds like he just wanted to hear himself talk, idk. A dead mall is literally a long empty hallway, that flat straight-on shot IS the whole point, it shows the emptiness better than some artsy angle ever could. Once you start crouching by fountains and tilting everything, every photo starts looking the same and kinda try-hard, like you're copying some YouTube tutorial. Or maybe it's just me but sometimes the boring shot is the honest one, and a local history page picking up one pic doesn't mean the other fifty were wrong. Depth is nice and all, but flat can hit harder when the place itself is flat and dead.
