Found a mall directory trick that maps every dead store, use the fire evacuation signs
The old fire escape maps in the stairwells at Westfield in Paramus still list stores like Chess King and Spencer's that closed in 1998, so I started photographing them before they get painted over. Anybody else shooting the emergency maps before they're gone, or am I the only one down that rabbit hole?
Started doing the same thing at the Garden State Plaza a few years back and the trick that saved me was shooting the whole sign first, then close ups of each store name. Flash off helps a ton since those old maps are usually behind plastic and the glare will wash out half the text. I also started writing down the date and which stairwell it was, because after a while all those photos blur together and you forget which floor you were on. Check the loading dock hallways too, they sometimes have older maps than the main ones. Those things disappear fast once a remodel starts, so keep at it.
