Unpopular opinion: I sat through a sermon and an atheist podcast on the same topic, and the podcast was easier to talk to people about
Back in March my neighbor Dave kept pushing me to come to his church's Wednesday night thing on forgiveness, and the same week I listened to a podcast where a guy argued forgiveness is just a way to dodge accountability. What surprised me was that I could repeat the podcast's point at a BBQ without anyone storming off, but quoting the sermon got me the cold shoulder. Why is it easier to argue about religion when the religious side is not even in the room?
The sermon asked people to change something about themselves, and that feels like an attack even when it is not aimed at anyone in the room. The podcast let everyone nod along about how other people use forgiveness to get off the hook, so nobody had to look in the mirror. Dave probably wanted you there because the whole thing only works if you sit with it and let it poke at you. A BBQ is built for agreeing, not for being called out.
