My sump pump quit during that big rain two weeks ago and I didn't find out till water hit the carpet
So we got almost 3 inches of rain in one night two weeks ago over here in Park Hill and I woke up at 5am to my feet splashing. Walked down to the basement and there was standing water across maybe 200 sq ft of carpet, all because the sump pump in the pit just gave out without any warning. Here's the part that still bugs me, I had never once tested that thing in the four years we've lived here, not one time, because it always kicked on when I happened to be down there doing laundry so I figured it was fine. I called a guy out and he said the float switch was shot, $340 for a new pump and install, but then he told me a battery backup would run another $500 to $900 depending on how long I want it to hold. It got me thinking about how many things in a house are silently one bad day away from a problem, and I only ever think about them after they fail. I already bought a water alarm puck for $15 and set it right next to the pit, which honestly I should have done forever ago. How often do you all test your sump pump, and does anyone actually run a backup or am I overthinking it for a house that already has a walkout drainage slope?
