Learned the hard way that thermal paste isn't "more is better"

Learned that lesson the messy way too, always stick with a pea sized dot now.

Took me 3 years to figure out my pie crust was weeping from this one mistake

Cold butter can be a pain to work with, but I learned the hard way that room temp butter in a pie dough just turns into a greasy mess no matter how long you chill it. I started keeping my butter in the freezer for about 15 minutes before cutting it in, and that fixed the whole problem. Once it's in the dough, I give it a solid two hour fridge rest before rolling.

Chased an injector knock for 8 hours before I found the real issue

My buddy's 2005 F-250 had the exact same thing, a cracked return line that sounded just like an injector was dying. We spent a whole weekend swapping parts before we caught it. I mean, I get why people jump to the worst case with injector knock because it's so distinct and scary sounding, but honestly, I think sometimes chasing the simple stuff first can waste just as much time if you're not methodical about it. Maybe it's just me but idk, I'd rather spend the first hour ruling out the injectors with a known good spare or a compression test than blindly hunting for an air leak that might not even be there. It's all a gamble until you actually see the problem.

Stuck choosing between a banned book for my kid's school project and an approved one that felt watered down

The school library near us had 12 approved books on censorship and only one of them even mentioned the word "ban" in the title lol. @jenny580 is exactly right about the watered down versions being useless. My kid's project ended up way stronger because he could actually cite real examples from that banned book instead of some generic government textbook. The PTA moms can side-eye all they want but theyre not the ones helping their kid understand why some books get pulled from shelves. I got a similar lecture last year and just told them straight up that my kid chose the book himself after reading both options. At the end of the day these kids are old enough to start thinking critically about what information gets kept from them and a school project is the perfect place for that.

Got yelled at for posting a news article in a local Facebook group in Austin...

Been through this exact thing on a buy nothing group in Dallas, learned the hard way that most local FB groups have secret rules about "linking out" that they never put in the pinned posts. Take screenshots of the article with the source visible and crop the URL out, that way you're sharing info without giving them a reason to flag it as external content. Next time just message the admin first with a quick heads up about what you're posting, most of them chill out when you act like you're asking permission instead of just doing it.
