Rant: That $18 'Fresh Coat' Paint Shop on Michigan Ave is a Front and I Have Proof
So there's this little paint and body shop on Michigan Ave near the old train station, and a buddy of mine swore by them for touch ups on his delivery vans. I walked in and the guy behind the counter quoted me $18 to buff out a scratch on my hatch, which I laughed at because a real shop charges $150 minimum for that. He said come back in an hour, so I did, and the scratch was gone but so was the trim piece above my rear window. Turns out they were running a chop setup in the back, pulling parts off cars parked overnight and reselling them on Marketplace, and my trim ended up listed for $9 two days later. I screenshotted the listing with my VIN tag still visible on the piece and sent it to the cops, who said they already had 6 other complaints. Place got shut down and the owner is facing charges, but I still see people recommending them in local Facebook groups. What do you all do to vet a cheap shop before you hand over your keys?
