PSA: I ran 5w-30 in my 7.3 for 8,000 miles and the oil sample came back cleaner than the 15w-40
Honestly I did this by accident. My shop in Boise got slammed in January, my F-250 needed a change, and all I had on the shelf was a jug of 5w-30 synthetic I bought for my wife's car. So I dumped it in, figuring I would swap it out at 3,000 miles like usual. 8,000 miles later I finally sent a sample to Blackstone, and the iron and soot numbers came back slightly better than the 15w-40 runs I have on file. Now I am stuck, because half the guys I know say thin oil in an old HEUI motor is asking for trouble with the injectors, and the other half say the oil spec matters way more than the weight when it is a good full synthetic. The truck is a 2001 with 287,000 on it, all stock, and it did not burn a drop the whole run. I am not saying everyone should do this, I am saying the test results surprised me and now I do not know what to put in next time. Anybody got real oil analysis numbers on a 7.3 with 5w-30, or am I the only one dumb enough to run it this long?
