Chatted with a gallery owner in Austin last weekend and now I get why some artists watermark everything

She told me she had to take down three prints from her site last month because someone stole the files and sold them on Etsy. I always thought watermarks looked tacky but now I'm actually considering putting a subtle one on my finished pieces. Any of you found a watermark that doesn't ruin the vibe?

A real simple one in the bottom corner stops thieves without messing up the piece.

Has anyone tried putting their signature in the middle of the painting instead? I saw a collector once say thieves will often just crop out a corner signature and try to pass it off as unsigned. If you put it right in the main image, it's a lot harder to remove without damaging the whole piece. @elliotr39 might be right about the simple corner approach stopping casual thieves, but a dedicated one will get around it. I think a middle signature is a better long-term deterrent for anyone who knows what they're doing.
