Pro tip: stop color picking from photos for your backgrounds

I spent like 4 years doing digital portraits where I'd just grab colors straight from the reference photo. Thought i was being efficient. Then last month a friend who teaches art pointed out that every single piece i had looked flat and muddy. She showed me how to manually pick hues 3 shades lighter and more saturated for the background wash. Tried it on a portrait of my nephew and the whole thing popped immediately. Anyone else ever get called out on something so basic that you felt stupid for not seeing it?

It's wild how one basic fix changes everything about the work.

My buddy Mike told me his whole setup was a mess till he moved a single cable. Fixed his latency and now he's actually winning games, wild how that works.
