Chat with a librarian changed how I see content moderation
Had a chat with a librarian at the downtown branch last Tuesday. She said the library doesn't ban books, they just place them in different sections based on age and context. Then she asked why social media can't do the same instead of outright deleting stuff. Never thought of it that way before. How do you guys feel about labeling vs removal?

A library can label a book but social media also has to deal with harassment and illegal content.

Wow, I see it totally different actually. A library labels books but they don't let a dangerous person walk in and scream racist stuff at kids all day. Social media has to deal with people directly harassing others, posting revenge porn, or coordinating violence. You can't just slap a label on a death threat and call it a day. Plus books are static objects you choose to pick up, not algorithms shoving content in your face every five seconds. The volume and speed of trash on social media makes that comparison pretty weak if you ask me.
