Rant: ran my FB ad budget into the ground targeting 'everyone in the US' for 5 weeks
I set up my first real campaign back in March for my sister's candle shop and just clicked the broadest audience possible since I figured more eyeballs meant more sales. Dropped about $700 over 5 weeks and got a ton of clicks but almost zero checkouts, which made no sense to me at the time. Then a friend who runs ads for a gym in Tampa asked to see my setup and literally laughed, said I was paying to show candles to people who don't even burn them. Pulled up the breakdown and saw 80 percent of my spend going to dudes 18 to 24 in random states. Anyone got a go-to way to build a real audience without guessing, or do you just test small and let the data tell you?
Did you know the same exact thing happened to a buddy of mine who sells beard oil? He blasted his ads to all of America and most of his cash went to teen girls in Texas who probably don't grow facial hair. He showed me his report and it was painful, thousands of clicks from people who were never going to buy a thing. What worked for him was starting tiny, just one city and one age group, then letting the numbers show him who actually clicked and bought. He spent maybe 40 bucks on a few small tests before he put real money behind anything. Takes longer but you stop lighting cash on fire.
