A hostel owner in Medellin said buy noise cancelling headphones before anything else, and 8 months in I finally get it
I laughed at him and bought a $30 pair instead of the $300 ones he pushed, but after 4 months of co-working spaces, buses, and roosters at 5am, I caved and now I'm the guy telling every new nomad the same thing, so what's the one piece of gear you wish you'd bought on day one instead of month six?
The headphones thing is real but nobody warns you that half the noise is stuff you actually want to hear, like the street vendors or your host's kid learning guitar. The gear I wish I'd bought day one was a cheap unlocked phone, because losing my main one in month five meant no maps, no bank, no nothing.
