Power went out in my Co-working space in Medellin, had to rethink everything

I was on a video call with a client in Chicago when the whole building lost power around 3pm last Tuesday. My laptop had maybe 40% battery, so I grabbed my stuff and ran to a coffee shop 6 blocks away, but their wifi was down too from the same grid issue. Has anyone else dealt with a city-wide outage while trying to meet a deadline, and what's your backup plan for power and internet that actually works?

These grid problems seem to hit everyone at once, which makes having a local backup pointless.

The real issue is how many local backups are on the same grid as the thing you're backing up. Most people keep their external drive in the same house, same neighborhood, same city. That's not a backup, that's just a second copy in the same fire. Throw one in a safe deposit box or your parents' basement three towns over and suddenly the grid going dark isn't the end of the world.
