Found my grandpa's original workbench under 4 layers of paint

I bought my house in Grand Rapids back in 2018 and that old bench in the garage was just this lumpy, green mess. Last weekend I finally got curious and started stripping it with a heat gun and a scraper, took about 6 hours over two days. Underneath all that crust was beautiful solid maple with his name carved near the leg, dated 1962. It got me thinking about how we just cover stuff up instead of fixing the surface, you know? Has anyone else uncovered something cool hidden under old paint or finishes in their place?
