My kitchen tile job taught me a thing about grout lines

I redid my kitchen backsplash last month and kept seeing people online say to just eyeball the spacing. I used those little plastic spacers for the first time, the 1/8 inch ones. The difference is huge, my lines are straight and even. Without them, my old bathroom tile looks wobbly now. What's the biggest mistake you see people make with tile?

My buddy Greg tried to tile his own shower without sealing it first. He used plain drywall behind the subway tile. About six months later, the whole wall started to swell and buckle from the moisture. He had to tear everything out and start over, which cost him way more than just buying the right cement board. Not using the correct waterproof backing is a huge mistake I see a lot.

Man, reading that story from @dixon.amy about the drywall disaster is a perfect example. I saw a forum post once where someone didn't back-butter their large format tiles, just put mortar on the wall. Every single one of them hollowed out and cracked when someone leaned on the counter. You have to get full coverage or the tile has no strength.
