One inspector's offhand remark fixed my tile layout process

Back in March, an inspector doing a final walkthrough on a bathroom in Tacoma casually said my tile grid looked like it was set for the cuts to land right where the shower door would go. He wasn't marking me down, just noting it, but it clicked that I'd been eyeballing layouts instead of plotting them out on paper first. I started drawing every wall to scale with a cheap 10 dollar grid pad, measuring from the actual finished edges like he suggested. Has anyone else had a pro drop a quick tip that turned into your permanent method?
