Spent 3 weekends patching drywall before I figured out the real problem was my mud
So I've been fixing up this 1950s ranch outside Akron for the past 4 months, and every single drywall patch I did looked lumpy and awful no matter how careful I was. Last Saturday my neighbor Dave (retired contractor, nosy in the best way) watched me slathering on a big glob of mud for about 30 seconds before he just started laughing. Turns out I was using the stuff straight from the bucket like peanut butter when I should've been thinning it down and doing 3 thin coats instead of one fat one. I'd wasted $60 on sanding sponges and probably 12 hours re-doing corners, all because nobody ever said the words 'thin coats' to me. Anyway my patches look like glass now, which is a little insulting honestly. What's the thing you did wrong for way too long before someone casually pointed it out?
Learning that thin coats thing changed my whole deal with drywall honestly. Used to fight every patch for hours thinking I just sucked at it, then watched one YouTube video where the guy barely puts any mud on the knife and it clicked. Now the hard part is just waiting between coats instead of rushing it.
