The tape measure with the stud finder built in, actually worth it?

I picked up one of those combo laser distance tools last month at a supplier in Cleveland for $120 and figured the stud finder part would be useless gimmick. Ended up using it to locate a backing board on a remodel where the prints were off by 4 inches, and it hit the mark twice in a row. Has anyone else had luck with these combo units or am I just lucky so far?

Have you tested it against a known stud location to confirm before trusting it?
