Cutting line caught my ankle on a sandbar last week, wear guards

I was running a small cutter suction near the Pasquotank River last Thursday when the swing cable snapped off the anchor. It whipped across the deck and caught my boot, nothing broke through but it left a hell of a bruise and scared me straight. I've been at this for 6 years and always thought I was careful, but I never wore shin guards or heavy chaps because they felt too bulky in the cabin. After that close call, I dug out an old pair of welding chaps and wore them the next two days. They're hot and awkward but I didn't get complacent again. My buddy runs a hydraulic dredge down in Morehead City and says he's seen a cable flail take out a guy's kneecap in 2019. Have any of you tried lighter protection gear that actually stays comfortable during a full shift?
