TIL a cheap flow meter beats my gut feeling every time

I used to eyeball the slurry density on our discharge line, figured 25 years of this work meant I knew what it looked like. Then last fall we got a new job in Savannah and the material was way finer than I'm used to. My guess said we were running lean, but the flow meter showed we were pushing almost 35% solids. Trusting that number instead of my instincts saved us from a busted pump seal and a 2 day shutdown. Anyone else had their old school methods proven wrong by instrumentation?

Dang, my ears perk up whenever someone talks about Savannah humidity wrecking gear.
