Bought a $300 auto taper from a guy on Craigslist, worst mistake of my career

Back in 2018 I saw an ad for a barely used automatic taper for $300. Seemed like a steal since they go for over a grand new. Met the guy in a parking lot outside Tulsa, he said it just needed a little cleaning. Spent a whole weekend taking it apart, found the drive belt was shredded and the gear housing had a crack. Parts alone ran me $180 and it still never worked right. Pushed mud uneven, jams every 20 feet. Ended up tossing it in the dumpster behind my truck. Should have just stuck with my hand tools. Anyone else get burned buying used equipment from random sellers?

GEEZ, that's brutal. Did you actually CHECK the belt and housing before you handed over the cash, or was it one of those deals where you're so excited about the price you just toss the money over?
