Ceiling tape job at the old mill turned into a nightmare last Tuesday

We were taping this converted textile mill in Lowell and the ceiling was concrete beams with weird uneven joints from the 1800s. My helper and I spent 8 hours just on the first 60 feet, and every strip we laid down bubbled up because of some moisture trapped in the old plaster. Had to rip it all out and switch to mesh tape with a setting compound, which finally stuck. My back still hurts from holding the hawk overhead all day. Anybody else run into converted factory ceilings that fight back like that?

Old mill buildings are cursed surfaces, man. Had a similar fight with horsehair plaster that just sucked moisture like a sponge. Setting compound is the only way to go, mesh tape never did me wrong on those jobs.
