Clients quote said taping is just painting, I laughed for 5 minutes

Last Tuesday at a walkthrough in Tacoma, the homeowner pointed at my mud pan and told me his buddy said drywall finishing is basically painting with a wider brush. I set the pan down, counted to three, then asked him if he wanted to try backrolling a 12-foot butt joint with a 10-inch knife. He shut up pretty fast. I mean, I get it, from the outside it looks simple, but so does plumbing until your basement floods. Anyone else had a customer or GC say something equally dumb about the trade?

The real kicker is when they say it with total confidence, like they've watched a YouTube video and now they know everything. Did your guy ever actually try to pull a knife after you offered, or did he just stand there with his coffee like a statue? I swear some folks think the hardest part of this job is just not dropping the bucket.
