Old timer showed me a 2 foot rule for floating ceilings

Back in 2017 on a big job in Tulsa, this 60 year old finisher watched me struggle with a 12 foot ceiling and just laughed. He said "you're fighting the mud, not helping it" and showed me how to use a 2 foot straight edge to knock down the high spots before the full float. Why do we never learn these little tricks in trade school, has anyone else picked up something from a veteran on site that stuck with them?

Hell yeah, nothing like a 60 year old making you feel like a rookie with a 2 foot stick. Trade school taught me math, but the real secrets come from guys who've been eating drywall dust since before I was born.
