Why does everyone say you need a power sander for smooth walls?
My electric sander quit on a job yesterday, so I finished with a hand sanding block. Lots of folks think hand sanding is too slow and never gets as smooth. But I focused on light pressure and even strokes, and the walls looked great. The home owner said it was the smoothest finish they had seen. This little win made me question if we rely too much on power tools.

My 1928 bungalow got hand-sanded, better control.

Sounds like @hugoj13 skipped arm day for a year.

That idea that we might rely too much on power tools is spot on. Like @hugoj13 found with his bungalow, hand sanding lets you feel the wall and fix problems right away. You notice every little rough spot and can smooth it out evenly. A power sander can sometimes make things worse if you rush, but with your hands, you set the pace. It turns a chore into a careful craft, and that shows in the finish!
